Science, Technology, R&D: Reality Bites One can’t open a U.S. newspaper, news magazine or pass multiple TV channels without confronting blurbs about science and technology, paean to our dependence on their role in our 21st century lives. Our school systems are bashed for not churning out products with greater understanding of the genre. Internationally, the perceived tech standings of countries in some pecking order become front page news, as in the recently reported decline of the U.S. from 1st in the world to 7th in technology innovation between 2005 and 2006. On the credit side, another study reports that 28 percent of U.S. adults can now understand science and technology reporting at the basic newspaper level. |

Technology and Community Prosperity, Or Perhaps Survival In the marvelous and oft-repeated British series on NPR, “All Creatures Great and Small,” based on the books by James Herriot, there is an early episode that depicts a philandering vet’s long-suffering wife, beautifully acted, who periodically appears at the door to the surgery, mumbling, “…where will it end, where will it all end?” This opening post to the digital component of our Tech Know menu poses the same question applied to our technology venues.
